Jonny Wilkinson believes that Danny Cipriani will take Australia's Super 15 competition by storm with the Melbourne Rebels and play himself into contention for the World Cup next year.

Cipriani is due to join his new team-mates on Wednesday and Wilkinson is confident that Cipriani's controversial departure from Wasps will help the player rediscover himself and the kind of form that enabled him to score 18 points on his international debut in the Six Nations victory over Ireland in March 2008.

England manager Martin Johnson has made it clear that Cipriani, 22, cannot be part of his elite player squad this season as the fly-half's Super 15 commitments will rule him out of this season's Six Nations Championship. Melbourne open their campaign against the Waratahs on Feb 18, six days before England face France at Twickenham.

Yet Wilkinson, who himself has revived his international career by turning his back on the English domestic game with a successful move to Top 14 side Toulon, believes Cipriani's move away from the media spotlight could benefit England in the longer term. The last of Cipriani's seven caps came in England's 42-6 defeat by South Africa at Twickenham in November 2008.

"Being away clears away the obstacles, the hurdles and the distractions and make the most of your talent. If Danny can achieve some of that, then I am sure he can do that. I have no doubt he will go over there and take it by storm. It would be a good move wherever he went, because he will do a hell of a job."

He has spent the summer since leaving Wasps training with a number of football clubs in an attempt to condition himself for what he hopes will be a new chapter in a career that has stalled since he suffered a horrendous ankle injury while playing in the Premiership semi-final in 2008.

Wilkinson holds high hopes of representing England at next year's World Cup, but says he would welcome the rivalry of a Cipriani firing on all cylinders again for a place in Johnson's 30-man squad bound for New Zealand.

"Danny has a huge, huge future," added Wilkinson. "This may be an experience that is going to give him an even bigger impact when it does come about.

"The important thing is what he does is right for him and that his next step is a move forward. If he is in control of the move and able to influence it, then it will be a big, big step.

England manager Martin Johnson said Wednesday it "didn't get any tougher" than dropping former captain Steve Borthwick from his senior 32 man squad.

But England's 2003 World Cup captain insisted this was a sign of the "pressure" on his players and that "anyone who thinks they are comfortable in the England 32 won't be there for very long".

And as if to prove his point that no-one could take their place for granted, Johnson refused to confirm Lewis Moody as his captain through to next year's World Cup in New Zealand.

Back-row forward Moody was handed the captaincy after Borthwick's knee injury meant the second row missed England's tour of Australia.

That trip saw Moody become only the second England captain, after Johnson in 2003, to lead England to a Test win over the Wallabies on Australian soil courtesy of a 21-20 victory in Sydney in June.

"There is big pressure on guys. Anyone who thinks they are comfortable in the England 32 won't be there for very long.

"Guys are wondering how they are going to get in. It is very competitive and the best squad we have ever had."

As for telling Borthwick he was no longer one of his top four second rows, former lock Johnson said: "It doesn't get any tougher.

"We had the conversation and Steve instantly said: 'I'll prove you wrong'. That is exactly what you want. He hasn't whined about it, he hasn't moaned about it."

He insisted Borthwick could play himself into contention despite the fine performances in Australia from the likes of Courtney Lawes and Tom Palmer.

"If you are playing better than the number one guy then there is never a time when you haven't found yourself in the England team.

England, beaten finalists in France three years ago, begin the World Cup against Argentina in Christchurch on September 10 next year.

They announced on Wednesday that their final warm-up matches would take place next August against Wales, home and away on August 6 and 13, followed by a clash with Ireland in Dublin on August 27.

But before then they face a gruelling programme of internationals in November, with New Zealand, Australia, Samoa and world champions South Africa all visiting Twickenham on successive weekends.

"We talk about the progression to the World Cup being lots of little steps but we took a big one with the win in Australia.

"There are small margins between winning and losing but to actually get on the right side of it and hold onto it and get the win is a pretty big step.

"There has never been a bad All Blacks side. The win was a big step but we have got to follow it up and improve next time we play."

The biggest decision facing Deans as he selects his side to play the Springboks at Suncorp stadium is the one involving out-of-sorts star player Matt Giteau.

The Brumbies playmaker has had an indifferent season following an end-of-year tour last year in which he also under-achieved. He missed a crucial kick, which cost the Wallabies the Test against Scotland and he made an equally costly miss to deny them victory against England in Sydney last month.

Though Deans gave Queensland Reds centre Anthony Faingaa an extended run in the team drills last week, the expectation is that Giteau will get the nod at inside centre next to the electrifying Quade Cooper at flyhalf.

If Giteau is selected, he would also have beaten off the challenge of Berrick Barnes, who hasn't exactly covered himself in glory since transferring from the Reds to the Waratahs.

Deans also has to make a call on whether Drew Mitchell or Cameron Shepherd will start on the wing after Peter Hynes and Digby Ioane were ruled out through injury.

Mitchell seemed to fall out of favour after some poor performances last month and was omitted from the Tri-Nations squad before the injuries to Hynes and Ioane earned him a reprieve.

Though the Wallabies are supposed to name their side today, they have been forced to make last-minute deliberations over whether regular captain Will Genia will feature in the starting line-up.

Genia has recovered from a broken thumb and if he was managed conservatively he would start off the bench but there is huge pressure on the Wallabies to start their Tri-Nations campaign with a win.

After the Brisbane Test they clash twice with the All Blacks before they have to front up twice against the Springboks at altitude.

Though there is clear pressure on both coaches to get a positive result, Deans received much needed support from former Wallaby grand-slam-winning captain Andrew Slack, who suggested that sacking the Kiwi would be "madness".
