Andy powell has told Warren Gatland he is ready for a dramatic Wales return.

Powell, who hit the headlines after the infamous golf buggy incident during the Six Nations, is aiming to force his way back into the Welsh squad for the second autumn international against South Africa.

The Lions back-row star was left out of Gatland’s 33-man party for the November Tests, although he isn’t eligible for the opening game with Australia anyway because of player-release issues.

But Powell is determined to force Gatland’s hand by taking a starring role for Wasps, who take on Premiership high-flyers Northampton at Adams Park tomorrow.

He says the move away from Welsh rugby has re-invigorated him, given him renewed zest for rugby and brought him back to the top of his game.

As well as facing the Wallabies, Wales meet South Africa, Fiji and New Zealand during a daunting autumn campaign.

Powell said: “It was always the understanding that I wouldn’t be available for the first match. But I am very hopeful of forcing my way back into the squad for the other three internationals.

Powell says he is relishing the move across the Severn Bridge to England, having joined Wasps after parting company with the Blues.

“I’m definitely playing with a smile on my face again, I haven’t had that for a while,” beamed Powell. “It seems like the old Newport days at the start of my career. I’m playing with loads of emotion and aggression.

“I needed to be challenged more and I needed to be tested. I want to push myself to being a better player and Wasps is a place where you can do that. This club will get the best out of me, they push you the whole time.

“At any new club you need to establish yourself right away and I sense like I have gelled with the other players quickly.

“I’m approaching full fitness and form. I reckon I’m a week or so away from being the real Andy Powell.”

Andy Irvine, the former international full-back who is widely regarded as one of the greatest players Scotland has ever produced, is to become the first independent chairman of Celtic Rugby, the body which organises and runs the Magners League.

Irvine is currently chairman of the British and Irish Lions committee, while Feehan is chief executive of the Lions and the Six Nations. As it was also confirmed that the affairs of Celtic Rugby will now be run from the same Dublin office that looks after the Lions and Six Nations, the moves could fuel speculation that efforts might eventually be made to revive the concept of a fully British League involving English sides.

Irvine's appointment was one of a number of administrative changes announced at the Magners League launch in Cardiff. Other developments included the addition of two Italian representatives to the Celtic Rugby board to reflect the entry of Italian clubs into the competition, and the appointment of John Feehan as chief executive.

Until now, the administration of the Magners League has largely been carried out by David Jordan, who will be retained in the position of tournament director, operating in a solo capacity from his home near Glasgow. In their entirety, the raft of changes being made represent an increasingly professional approach for a competition that experienced a six per cent increase in spectator numbers last season.

Although he will have no executive function, Irvine effectively fills the role vacated by John Hussey, the Irish official who has acted as Celtic Rugby chairman for the past seven years. Well known across the rugby world, Irvine also spent two years as president of the Scottish Rugby Union between 2005 and 2007, bringing much-needed stability to an organisation that was wrestling with rising debts and had just gone through a calamitous management meltdown.

"It is my desire to do everything I can to see the Magners League competition reach it's fullest potential," said Feehan. "Not only do I believe that the competition can be pushed further, I think that my team and I are uniquely qualified and ideally situated to make that a reality.

"Taking on the Magners League will undoubtedly pose a few challenges, but we are ready to face them and are looking forward to getting involved with the game at club level."
